Ingredients

  • 1 ripe Chaunsa mango (soft, fragrant, carbide-free)

Choose a naturally tree-ripened mango for the safest first food

  • 1-2 tablespoons breast milk, formula, or boiled-and-cooled water

Only to thin the puree for younger babies

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Pick a perfectly ripe mango

Choose a ripe Chaunsa that gives slightly when pressed and smells sweet at the stem end. Avoid mangoes with a sour or chemical smell, patchy hard-and-soft spots, or an artificially uniform colour, which can signal carbide ripening. A naturally ripened mango is softest and safest for baby's first taste.

2

Wash and peel

Rinse the mango well under running water and pat dry. Peel off the skin completely with a clean knife or peeler. Always use clean hands and utensils when preparing baby food.

3

Cut the flesh

Slice the flesh away from the flat central stone on both sides. Cut the cheeks and any flesh around the seed into small chunks. Discard the skin and stone.

4

Puree until smooth

Blend the mango chunks in a small blender or mash thoroughly with a fork until completely smooth. For babies just starting solids around 6 months, add a little breast milk, formula, or cooled boiled water to make a thin, runny consistency. A ripe Chaunsa is so soft it often purees with no liquid at all.

5

Check texture and temperature

Make sure there are no lumps or fibrous strings that could be hard to swallow. Serve at room temperature, never hot. The first time, offer just a teaspoon or two.

6

Serve fresh

Spoon-feed the puree fresh, or offer it on a pre-loaded spoon for baby-led weaning. Refrigerate any leftovers immediately and use within 24 hours, or freeze in cubes for later.

Tips for the Perfect Recipe

Use a ripe, carbide-free mango

Sweet, fibre-free varieties like tree-ripened Chaunsa puree beautifully and need no added sugar, which is ideal since babies should not have sugar added to their food.

Adjust texture by age

Around 6 months, keep it thin and smooth. From 8-10 months you can leave it thicker, and by 10-12 months you can offer soft small mango pieces for self-feeding, always supervised.

Introduce one food at a time

When trying mango for the first time, offer it alone for a few days so you can watch for any reaction before combining it with other foods.

Never add honey or sugar

Ripe Chaunsa is naturally sweet, and honey is unsafe for babies under one year. Keep the puree plain.

Variations

Mango and banana mash

Mash half a ripe banana into the mango puree for a creamier texture and extra energy, once both foods are tolerated separately.

Mango with yogurt

For babies over 6 months who tolerate dairy, stir a spoon of plain full-fat yogurt into the puree for a richer, calcium-rich meal.

Mango oatmeal

Swirl the puree into plain cooked baby oat cereal to naturally sweeten breakfast without any added sugar.

About This Recipe

Mango is one of the most beloved first foods across Pakistan and South Asia, where families have weaned babies onto soft seasonal fruit for generations. During the summer mango season, mashed ripe mango is a natural, affordable and nutrient-rich choice handed down through grandmothers' kitchens. Pakistani Chaunsa, prized for its smooth, fibre-free flesh and honeyed sweetness, is especially well suited to baby purees because it mashes effortlessly and needs nothing added. Today many parents blend old desi wisdom with modern guidance, offering mango as a gentle introduction to solids while following their pediatrician's advice on timing and texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can babies eat mango puree?

Most babies can start mango puree around 6 months, once they show signs of readiness for solids such as sitting up with support and good head control. Every baby is different, so always check with your pediatrician before introducing solids or any new food.

Is mango a common allergen for babies?

Mango is not considered a common allergen, but any new food can occasionally cause a reaction. Introduce it on its own for a few days and watch for signs like rash, swelling, or digestive upset; if you notice any reaction, stop and consult your doctor.

How do I choose a safe, carbide-free mango for my baby?

Pick a mango that is uniformly soft, smells sweet and fruity at the stem, and has a natural rather than artificially even colour. Avoid any with a sour or chemical smell or hard-and-soft patches. Buying tree-ripened Chaunsa from a trusted farm source is the safest choice for baby food.

Do I need to cook the mango before pureeing it?

No, ripe mango does not need to be cooked. A soft, ripe Chaunsa blends or mashes into a smooth puree on its own. Just wash, peel, and remove the stone before serving.

How should I store and freeze mango puree?

Keep fresh puree in a covered container in the fridge and use it within 24 hours. To freeze, spoon it into an ice cube tray, freeze until solid, then transfer the cubes to a labelled freezer bag and use within one month. Thaw a cube in the fridge and never refreeze thawed puree.

Should I ask my pediatrician before giving my baby mango?

Yes. This recipe is general guidance, not medical advice. Talk to your pediatrician about when and how to start solids and introduce mango, especially if your baby was premature or has any health conditions or family history of food allergies.
