The 8 heaviest mango varieties — ranked

Below is the definitive ranking of mango varieties by typical and maximum fruit weight. Note that within any variety, individual fruit weight varies significantly based on growing conditions, fruit position on the tree, and orchard practices.

Bigger ≠ better

The largest commercial mango varieties (Keitt, Kent, Tommy Atkins) are typically the least sweet and most fibrous. The Brix ranking flips the size ranking almost exactly:

Largest commercial varieties

  1. Keitt — 0.8-1.4 kg, Brix 15-17
  2. Kent — 0.6-1.2 kg, Brix 17-19
  3. Tommy Atkins — 0.5-1.0 kg, Brix 14-16

Sweetest premium varieties

  1. Anwar Ratol — 0.1-0.15 kg, Brix 24-26
  2. Sindhri — 0.3-0.5 kg, Brix 22-24
  3. Alphonso — 0.2-0.3 kg, Brix 20-22

Pakistan's Anwar Ratol is roughly 1/20th the size of a Keitt but commands 5-10× the price per kilogram because of flavour intensity. This is why Pakistan and India produce smaller premium mangoes while the US, Mexico, and Brazil produce larger commercial mangoes.

The biggest mango in Pakistan: Sindhri

Pakistan's largest commercial mango variety is Sindhri, with typical fruit weights of 300-500g and exceptional specimens reaching 700g. Sindhri originates from Mirpur Khas in Sindh province and is named after the town of Sindhri (Tehsil Sindhri, District Mirpur Khas).

While Sindhri is smaller than Keitt or Kent, it is significantly sweeter and has zero fibre. Pakistani buyers who specifically want a "big mango" choose Sindhri; export buyers wanting the largest possible mango choose Keitt or Kent from Mexican/Florida imports.

Other large Pakistani mango varieties

  • Fajri — 0.4-0.8 kg, late-season Pakistani variety, can occasionally reach 1 kg
  • Dussehri — 0.2-0.4 kg, mid-season, sweeter than Fajri
  • Suvarnarekha — 0.3-0.5 kg, ornamental variety with reddish skin
  • Neelum — 0.2-0.4 kg, the latest-season Pakistani variety

The story behind the 3.435 kg record

The world record holder is a single specimen of the Sergio variety, harvested in 2009 in Iligan City, Philippines. The tree was grown by Sergio Bodiongan and his wife Maria Socorro on their family farm. The variety is named after Sergio himself — it was a chance seedling that produced unusually large fruit, which they propagated.

The Sergio variety is believed to be a cross between Carabao (the Philippines' national mango) and another large-fruit variety, possibly Pico. It is not grown commercially outside the Philippines and the original specimens are extremely difficult to source — most "Sergio" fruit available internationally is mis-labeled large Carabao.

Guinness World Records verified the weight on 12 November 2009 using certified scales. The fruit was photographed, measured (30.2 cm length × 49.5 cm circumference), and confirmed to have grown naturally without water injection or chemical inflation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest mango in the world?+

The biggest mango ever recorded weighed 3.435 kg (7.57 lbs). It was a Sergio variety mango grown by Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan in the Philippines and harvested on August 27, 2009. The Guinness World Records officially verified the record on November 12, 2009.

Which mango variety is the largest by typical size?+

Keitt is the largest commercially grown mango variety, with typical fruits weighing 0.8 to 1.4 kg and occasional individual fruits reaching 2 kg. Keitt originated in Florida (USA) and is now grown widely in Mexico, Brazil, and Africa.

What is the biggest Pakistani mango variety?+

Sindhri is Pakistan's largest commercial mango variety, with individual fruits weighing 300-500g and occasional record specimens reaching 700g. Sindhri originates from Mirpur Khas in Sindh province. While smaller than Keitt or Kent, Sindhri is significantly sweeter (Brix 22-24 vs Keitt's Brix 15-17).

Does bigger mango mean better mango?+

No. Larger mango varieties (Keitt, Kent, Tommy Atkins) are typically less sweet and more fibrous than premium smaller varieties (Anwar Ratol at 100-150g, Alphonso at 200-300g). Size is a function of variety genetics, not quality. Pakistan's Anwar Ratol is roughly 1/20th the size of a Keitt but commands 5-10× the price per kilogram because of flavour intensity.

How is mango weight measured for records?+

For Guinness World Records, the mango must be weighed on certified scales, photographed, and witnessed by independent verifiers. The fruit cannot be artificially injected with water or chemicals. Sergio's 3.435 kg record specimen had a circumference of 49.5 cm and length of 30.2 cm.

Which country grows the biggest mangoes commercially?+

The Philippines holds the absolute record (Sergio mango), but commercially, the United States (Florida-developed varieties Keitt, Kent, Tommy Atkins now grown globally) produces the largest commercial mangoes by typical weight. Pakistan, India, and Mexico produce smaller but generally sweeter premium varieties.

Can I buy the biggest mango variety in Pakistan?+

Keitt and Kent are rarely grown commercially in Pakistan because Pakistani consumers prefer the sweeter local varieties (Sindhri, Chaunsa, Anwar Ratol). For the largest Pakistani mango, order Sindhri — typical fruits are 300-500g and the variety has the largest premium quality fruit in Pakistan's commercial supply.

Want Pakistan's largest sweet mango?

Order Sindhri — Pakistan's biggest premium variety, 300-500g per fruit, Brix 22-24, farm-direct from our Multan orchard.
