Mango vs Papaya: Complete Nutritional Comparison

By Malik Muneeb Altaf·

Mango and papaya are both beloved tropical fruits, but they have very different nutritional profiles. You will find a complete comparison.

Where Mango Wins

  • Vitamin A / Beta-carotene: 2.3x more than papaya — better for eye health
  • Vitamin E: 3x more than papaya — antioxidant for skin
  • Folate: More than papaya — important during pregnancy
  • Taste: Mango has a much more complex, sweet flavor profile
  • Versatility: More recipe options (lassi, kulfi, pickle, etc.)

Where Papaya Wins

  • Fewer calories: 28% fewer calories per 100g
  • Less sugar: 43% less sugar — better for diabetics and weight loss
  • Vitamin C: 70% more Vitamin C
  • Papain enzyme: Unique digestive enzyme not found in mango
  • Year-round availability: Papaya grows year-round; mango is seasonal

The Verdict

Both are excellent fruits. Choose mango when you want maximum flavor, Vitamin A, and antioxidants. Choose papaya when you want fewer calories, more Vitamin C, and digestive benefits.

We are obviously biased toward the mango. But we respect the papaya. During the off-season (October-May), papaya is a great way to satisfy your tropical fruit cravings while you wait for mango season to return.

Digestive Health: Papain vs Mangiferin

Papaya's star compound is papain, a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down protein and has been used for centuries as a meat tenderizer and digestive aid. It is particularly helpful after heavy, protein-rich meals. Mango's equivalent is mangiferin, a polyphenol found primarily in the peel and kernel. Research published in the journal BioFactors shows mangiferin has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant properties. While papain works directly on digestion, mangiferin operates at a deeper cellular level — reducing oxidative stress and supporting metabolic health over time.

Skin and Beauty Benefits

Both fruits are popular in natural skincare, but for different reasons. Mango's high Vitamin A and beta-carotene content supports skin cell turnover and gives skin a healthy glow — which is why mango face masks are a traditional beauty treatment in South Asia. Papaya's papain enzyme acts as a gentle chemical exfoliant, dissolving dead skin cells. For overall skin nutrition from the inside out, mango has the edge. For topical exfoliation, papaya is the better choice.

Which Varieties Compare Best?

Not all mangoes are equal in this comparison. Pakistani Sindhri has among the highest beta-carotene content of any mango variety, making it nutritionally superior to average mango data. Chaunsa, with its intense sweetness, delivers more natural sugars but also more flavor complexity than papaya can offer. If you are choosing between a generic supermarket mango and a good papaya, the papaya might win nutritionally — but a premium Multan-grown mango is in a different league entirely.

Best Way to Enjoy Both

A practical approach: eat mangoes generously during Pakistan's June-September season when they are at peak nutrition and flavor, and switch to papaya during the off-months. This gives you year-round tropical fruit nutrition with seasonal variety. For tips on making the most of mango season, see our guide to storing mangoes so nothing goes to waste.
