Biggest Mango Ever Grown: World Records

By Malik Muneeb Altaf··Updated

The biggest mango in the world weighs 4.25 kg (9 lb 5.9 oz) — grown in Guayatá, Boyacá, Colombia by Germán Novoa Barrera and Reina Marroquín, verified by Guinness World Records on 25 July 2020. The previous record (3.435 kg, India 2023) was officially superseded. The fruit was grown on a single tree using natural fertilization and traditional pruning — no special varietals or chemical enhancers.

The biggest mango in the world weighs 4.25 kg (9 lb 5.9 oz) — that is roughly the weight of a newborn baby or a small bowling ball. It was grown by Germán Orlando Novoa Barrera and Reina María Marroquín in Guayatá, Boyacá, Colombia, and verified by Guinness World Records on 25 July 2020. The fruit measured 61.5 cm in circumference and 23 cm tall — nearly twice the height of a standard bowling pin.

This page covers every mango world record we could verify: the heaviest mango, the tallest and oldest mango trees, the largest mango orchard, the sweetest cultivar by Brix score, and the countries that hold the biggest mango harvests. All records are cited and dated so you can cross-check them against the source.

The record was officially adjudicated in May 2021 after Colombia's Ministry of Agriculture and independent verifiers weighed the fruit and confirmed authenticity. The mango was grown on a small family farm at roughly 1,800 m altitude — an unusual environment for giant mango growth because high-elevation fruit normally stays smaller.

Previous Record Holders

  • 3.435 kg — Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, India (June 2023, local claim, not Guinness-verified)
  • 3.435 kg — Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan, Philippines (2009 Guinness record, now superseded)
  • 3.31 kg — Philippines (2009, earlier regional record)

For comparison, a typical large Sindhri weighs 300-500 g — the Colombian record mango was 8-14 times heavier than a normal commercial mango.

Heaviest Mango by Country

Different countries have produced their own record-breaking mangoes over the years. Guinness only verifies the single heaviest fruit globally — country records below are the highest verified or widely reported weights from each producing region.

Thailand1.8 kg2018Nam Dok Mai grown in Chiang Mai

It is worth noting that growing the heaviest mango is rarely the goal of commercial farmers. Flavor, sweetness, and consistency matter far more than sheer size. The heaviest mangoes are often from wild or semi-wild trees where a single fruit absorbs nutrients that would normally be shared among many.

Largest Mango Harvest Records

India holds the record for the largest total mango harvest at over 20 million tonnes in a single season. China ranks second at around 3.5 million tonnes, followed by Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan. In terms of yield per hectare, Israel and Brazil often lead due to advanced orchard management techniques, achieving 15-20 tonnes per hectare compared to 7-8 tonnes in traditional South Asian orchards.

Tallest and Biggest Mango Trees in the World

The mango tree records are less formally tracked than fruit weight, but several contenders are well documented:

  • Oldest mango tree: A 300+ year-old specimen in East Khandesh, Maharashtra, India — still fruiting as of recent surveys. Multiple trees in Bangladesh are also claimed to be 200+ years old.
  • Tallest mango tree: Mature wild mango trees (*Mangifera indica*) regularly reach 30-40 m (100-130 ft) tall under ideal conditions. The tallest documented specimens are in the Philippines and tropical India. Grafted commercial trees are deliberately kept much smaller (3-5 m) to make harvesting easier.
  • Biggest mango tree by canopy: The Kensington Pride tree in Bowen, Queensland (Australia), nicknamed "The Big Mango," covers a canopy of roughly 30 m diameter.
  • Largest mango orchard in history: Mughal Emperor Akbar's *Lakh Bagh* ("Garden of 100,000") near Darbhanga, Bihar, India — 100,000 trees planted in the 16th century. Portions of the original orchard still exist.

Fun Comparisons to Put Mango Records in Perspective

  • The record 4.25 kg mango weighed about as much as a newborn baby or a small bowling ball.
  • A single record mango contained roughly 2,500 calories — more than a full day's energy needs for an adult.
  • You could make over 4 liters of pure mango juice from just one record-breaking fruit.
  • The record mango was roughly the size of a rugby ball or an American football.
  • A typical Sindhri weighs 350 g — you would need 12 Sindhris to equal one record mango.
  • Stacking 10 of the world's heaviest mangoes would weigh 42.5 kg — heavier than an adult bulldog.

Why Size Does Not Equal Quality

In our experience, the sweetest and most flavorful mangoes are mid-sized. Oversized mangoes tend to have a higher water content, which dilutes the sugar concentration. A 350g Sindhri with 22-24 Brix is far more enjoyable than a 3kg fruit with mediocre flavor. The Brix scale does not care about weight — it measures sugar density.

We have not tried to grow the world's heaviest mango — we focus on growing the sweetest. Our Sindhri's Brix readings of 22-24 are, in our opinion, the real world record that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest mango in the world?

The biggest mango in the world weighs 4.25 kg (9 lb 5.9 oz). It was grown in Guayatá, Colombia, and verified by Guinness World Records on 25 July 2020. The fruit was 61.5 cm around and 23 cm tall — a Keitt-variety mango from a small family farm.

What is the heaviest mango variety?

No single variety consistently produces the heaviest mangoes. Giant-fruit records typically come from Keitt, Kent, and Haden varieties (Florida-origin cultivars), which have naturally larger fruit than Asian cultivars. Commercial Kent mangoes regularly reach 700-900 g per fruit.

Is the world's biggest mango edible?

Yes — all the record mangoes were ripe, edible fruit, not wood-hard or deformed. However, giant mangoes are rarely the tastiest. Oversized fruit tends to have diluted sugar and a more watery texture than mid-sized commercial varieties.

What is the tallest mango tree in the world?

Wild mango trees (*Mangifera indica*) can grow 30-40 m (100-130 ft) tall. The tallest documented specimens are in the Philippines and tropical India. Commercial orchard trees are kept to 3-5 m for practical harvesting.

What is the biggest mango producer in the world?

India produces over 20 million tonnes of mango per year — roughly 40% of global production — making it the largest mango producer in the world. China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan round out the top five. See our top mango producing countries guide.

Which country has the biggest mango variety?

Colombia holds the Guinness record for a single fruit, but in terms of average variety size, Kent and Keitt from Florida and Mexico regularly produce fruit over 1 kg. Pakistani varieties like Sindhri and Fajri can reach 500-800 g; India's Banganapalli and Thailand's Maha Chanok can exceed 1 kg.
