How to Tell If a Mango Is Ripe

Three simple checks — look, touch, and smell — to know exactly when your mango is ready to eat. Plus a variety-by-variety ripeness chart.

Look — Check the Color

Color is the first clue to ripeness, but it varies dramatically between varieties. Here is what to look for in each variety:

L

Langra (لنگڑا)

Remains green when ripe, golden-yellow flesh

Note: Langra stays green when ripe — check skin dullness, not color change.

S

Sindhri (سندھری)

Golden yellow skin and flesh when ripe

A

Anwar Ratol (انور رٹول)

Yellow-green skin, deep orange flesh

W

White Chaunsa Mosami (سفید چونسا موسمی)

Pale yellow-green skin, pale golden flesh

1

12 Number Ratol (بارہ نمبر رٹول)

Golden-yellow skin, deep orange flesh

W

White Chaunsa Nawab Puri (سفید چونسا نواب پوری)

Pale yellow skin, rich golden flesh

Ripening & Storage FAQs

How long does it take for mangoes to ripen after delivery?+
Most Pakistani mango varieties ripen within 1-3 days after delivery when kept at room temperature (25-30°C). Langra and Sindhri typically ripen within 1-2 days, while White Chaunsa varieties may take 2-3 days. MMA Farms ships mangoes at optimal ripeness so they arrive ready to eat or within a day of being ready.
Can I speed up mango ripening?+
Yes. Place mangoes in a paper bag with a banana or apple at room temperature. The ethylene gas from the banana speeds ripening by 12-24 hours. Do NOT use a plastic bag as it traps moisture and causes rot. Never use calcium carbide — it is harmful. MMA Farms mangoes are 100% carbide-free and naturally ripened.
Should I refrigerate mangoes?+
Only refrigerate mangoes that are already ripe. Cold temperatures (below 12°C) stop the ripening process entirely. Once ripe, store at 12-15°C in the refrigerator to extend shelf life by 2-3 days. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before eating for the best flavor.
How do I know if a Langra mango is ripe if it stays green?+
Langra is unique — it stays green even when fully ripe. The signs of a ripe Langra are: (1) slight give when gently pressed, (2) strong sweet aroma near the stem, and (3) slightly dull skin instead of shiny. If the Langra feels firm and has no aroma, give it 1-2 more days at room temperature.
What does it mean if my mango has black spots?+
Small black spots on the skin are usually harmless sugar spots — they indicate the mango is very sweet and ripe. However, large soft black patches may indicate bruising or overripeness. If the flesh underneath a small spot is orange and firm, the mango is fine to eat. If the flesh is brown and mushy, cut away that portion.
