How We Pack Your Mango Gift Box: From Orchard to Doorstep

By MMA Farms··6 min read

Why Packaging Matters

A mango is one of the most delicate fruits in the world. It bruises easily, ripens quickly in heat, and can go from perfect to overripe in a single day if mishandled. When you order a gift box from MMA Farms — whether you are in Lahore ordering for your aunt across town or in London sending to your parents in Multan — the packaging is what stands between a perfect unboxing experience and a disappointing one.

We take packaging seriously because your gift represents you. When your mother opens a box and finds eight flawless Sindhri mangoes nestled in foam, with a greeting card on top in your handwriting — that is a moment. We are not going to let a bruised fruit or a crushed box ruin it.

Here is exactly how we pack every gift box, step by step.

Step 1: Handpicking in the Orchard

Every MMA Farms mango is handpicked from our orchards in Multan, the mango heartland of Pakistan. Our pickers are experienced seasonal workers who have been harvesting mangoes for years — many for decades.

How we pick:

  • Pickers use long bamboo poles with padded baskets attached to the end for high branches
  • Lower branches are picked by hand with a gentle twist-and-pull motion
  • Each mango is placed (never dropped) into a cushioned collection basket
  • Picking happens in the early morning (5-8 AM) when temperatures are coolest

What we look for:

  • Correct maturity stage: shoulder development, skin color change, and slight softening at the stem end
  • No insect damage, sunburn spots, or latex stains
  • Proper size for the variety (each variety has an expected weight range)

Mangoes that do not meet our standards are separated for local market sale — they are still good fruit, just not gift-box grade.

Step 2: Washing and Grading

After picking, mangoes are transported to our packing facility within 2 hours. Speed matters — the less time between tree and cold storage, the longer the shelf life.

Washing: Mangoes are gently washed in clean water to remove dust, latex residue, and field debris. We do not use any chemical washes or wax coatings. What you receive is the mango in its natural state.

Grading: Each mango is hand-inspected and sorted into three grades:

  • Premium (Gift Box Grade): Perfect skin, no blemishes, correct size, ideal ripeness. These go into gift boxes.
  • Standard: Minor cosmetic imperfections but excellent taste. These go into economy boxes or local market.
  • Processing: Overripe or significantly blemished fruit. These go to pulp production.

For gift boxes, only Premium grade mangoes are used. Period.

Step 3: Individual Wrapping

This is where the care becomes visible. Every single mango in your gift box is individually wrapped.

Foam netting sleeve: A soft, expandable foam mesh sleeve is placed over each mango. This serves two purposes: it cushions the fruit against impacts during transit, and it prevents skin-to-skin contact between mangoes (which can cause pressure marks and accelerate ripening).

Tissue paper layer: For premium and corporate gift boxes, we add a sheet of food-grade tissue paper over the foam netting. This gives the unboxing a cleaner, more elegant appearance and provides an additional layer of protection.

Why this matters: A single bruise on a mango is not just cosmetic. The bruised area ripens faster than the rest of the fruit, creating an uneven eating experience. By wrapping each mango individually, we ensure that every fruit in the box ripens uniformly and arrives in the condition you would expect from a premium gift.

Step 4: Box Assembly

Our gift boxes are not generic cardboard containers. They are purpose-designed for mangoes.

Box construction:

  • Double-wall corrugated cardboard for structural strength
  • Ventilation holes on all four sides and the top to allow airflow
  • Branded exterior with the MMA Farms logo, variety name, and weight
  • Food-grade interior coating to prevent moisture absorption

Tray insert: Inside each box, a molded pulp tray holds the mangoes in individual compartments. This prevents rolling and shifting during transport. The tray is made from recycled paper pulp and is fully biodegradable.

Arrangement: Mangoes are placed stem-side down in the tray compartments. This is not arbitrary — mangoes stored stem-side down drip less latex (the sticky sap from the stem) onto other fruits and maintain a cleaner appearance.

Step 5: The Greeting Card

Every gift box includes a greeting card. If you provided a custom message during checkout, it is printed on the card. If you did not, we include a generic seasonal greeting.

The card is placed on top of the mangoes so it is the first thing the recipient sees when they open the box. For Urdu messages, we use Nastaliq script printing for an authentic, beautiful presentation.

Popular messages our customers write:

  • *"Ammi, ye aam aapke liye — bohat yaad aati hai."* (Mom, these mangoes are for you — missing you so much.)
  • *"Eid Mubarak from all of us in Dubai. Enjoy the season!"*
  • *"Happy birthday Bhai — nothing beats Sindhri in June."*

The greeting card turns a fruit delivery into a personal, emotional gift. It is free with every order.

Step 6: Cooling and Storage

After packing, sealed boxes are moved to our cold storage room maintained at 14-16 degrees Celsius. This temperature range is critical:

  • Below 12 degrees Celsius, mangoes suffer chilling injury — the skin turns grey-brown, the flesh becomes mealy, and flavor is destroyed
  • Above 18 degrees Celsius, ripening accelerates and shelf life shortens dramatically
  • The 14-16 degree range slows ripening without causing chilling injury, preserving both flavor and appearance

Boxes remain in cold storage for 1-4 hours depending on delivery scheduling. We never store gift boxes overnight — they are always packed and dispatched on the same day.

Step 7: Delivery Handoff

The final step is getting the box from our facility to the recipient's door.

Within Multan: Our own delivery team handles same-day deliveries. They use insulated bags in their vehicles during the hottest hours. Average delivery time from packing to doorstep: 3-6 hours.

Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Faisalabad: We partner with premium courier services that offer air-conditioned transport. Packages are picked up from our facility by 10 AM and delivered by the next morning. During extreme heat (above 42 degrees Celsius), we include gel ice packs inside the box.

Other cities across Pakistan: Deliveries are handled by our national courier partners with 2-day service. Boxes are routed through air-conditioned hubs to minimize heat exposure.

For international deliveries: Mangoes are packed to export specifications (additional foam, sealed liners, ISPM 15 compliant packaging) and handed to our air freight partner. See our international shipping guide for details on how international orders are processed.

What Makes MMA Farms Packaging Different

We do not use carbide-ripened fruit. Many vendors in Pakistan use calcium carbide — a chemical that forces rapid, uneven ripening — to make their mangoes look ready faster. We never use carbide. Our mangoes ripen naturally, which means they taste better, last longer, and are safer to eat.

Every mango is hand-inspected twice. Once at the grading stage and once during packing. If a mango has developed a soft spot or blemish between grading and packing (which can happen in a few hours), it is replaced.

We pack to order. Gift boxes are not pre-packed and sitting on a shelf. When your order comes in, we pick from the tree, grade, wrap, and pack specifically for your order. This means maximum freshness — the mangoes in your box were on the tree that same morning.

Our boxes are designed for gifting. The clean branding, the tissue paper, the greeting card, the tray insert — every detail is designed to make the recipient feel like they are receiving something special, not just a carton of fruit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What packaging materials does MMA Farms use for mango gift boxes?

We use food-grade corrugated cardboard boxes with ventilation holes, individual foam netting sleeves for each mango, tissue paper layers between fruits, and a molded pulp tray insert to prevent movement. The box is branded with the MMA Farms logo and includes a printed greeting card. All materials are recyclable.

Can I include a custom message in the gift box?

Yes. During checkout, you can write a personalized message in English or Urdu. We print it on a premium greeting card and place it on top of the mangoes so it is the first thing the recipient sees when they open the box. There is no extra charge for the greeting card.

What box sizes are available for mango gifts?

We offer three standard gift box sizes: a 3 kg box (6-8 mangoes depending on variety), a 5 kg box (10-14 mangoes), and a 10 kg family box (20-28 mangoes). Premium single-variety boxes are also available for customers who want only Sindhri, Anwar Ratol, or Chaunsa. Custom box sizes can be arranged for corporate or bulk gifting orders.

How do you keep the mangoes fresh during delivery?

We maintain a cold chain from packing to delivery. Mangoes are packed in a temperature-controlled room at 14-16 degrees Celsius. Delivery vehicles are either refrigerated or insulated with gel ice packs during hot weather. Within Punjab, most deliveries complete within 12-18 hours of packing. For other provinces, we use air-conditioned courier services with 24-48 hour delivery windows.

What happens if mangoes arrive damaged or overripe?

Our freshness guarantee covers every order. If any mangoes arrive damaged, bruised, or overripe, send us photos via WhatsApp within 12 hours of delivery. We will either replace the affected mangoes in your next delivery or issue a partial refund. Complete box replacements are sent free of charge if more than 30 percent of the fruit is affected.
